Response to a statement by Crisis about winter accommodation for rough sleepers

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Vulnerable people

A statement put out by Crisis today misrepresents the support we’re giving to local areas so they can protect vulnerable rough sleepers from life-threatening cold weather and the risks posed by coronavirus this winter.

The Night Shelter operating principles published today (Tuesday 13th October) will help shelters open as safely as possible if they are required to do so.

The principles have been developed in partnership with clinical experts at Public Health England.

This is the responsible thing to do as we look ahead to the winter.

We are working with councils, charities and other partners – backed by over £700 million of government funding this year alone – to protect vulnerable rough sleepers this winter, and provide longer term accommodation and tailored support as part of our commitment to end rough sleeping for good.

Our announcement today includes

  • A new £10 million Cold Weather Fund to support councils get rough sleepers off the streets during the winter by helping them to provide more self-contained accommodation.
  • An additional £2 million for faith and community groups to help them provide secure accommodation for rough sleepers.

Above all, the funding and guidance published today will mean that – working with councils and community groups – some of the most vulnerable people in society are given support and a safe place to stay this winter.
